ASYLUM SUPPORT MEETINGS
Next meeting Tuesday Sept 23rd.
The Asylum Seekers Support Meetings are held monthly. The
meetings can be a vital first point of contact for those who have not yet
made an asylum application and who have a real fear of persecution if they
return home.
Our Executive Director will be
available from 5.30 pm on meeting days, for informal discussion of
your immediate needs and/or how the meeting can be of most use to you. If
you need a referral to a specialist legal aid solicitor, your details will
be taken at this time.
These preliminary chats will help us to optimise the
structure of the main meeting to suit as many people as possible. PLEASE
arrive early to allow plenty of time to assess whether you will benefit from
a one to one talk with a solicitor at the end of the meeting. Due to
time pressures, the number of individual solicitor sessions will be limited.
The main meeting will run from 6.30 to 8.30 pm
The meeting will usually start with a talk given by two
solicitors and a barrister, followed by general questions after which there
will be an informal group discussion. One to one meetings with a
solicitor may be possible after this if time allows. Whilst there are likely
to be aspects of your own situation which you may not want to talk about in
the open meeting, sharing your story will be appreciated by and valuable to
others and you will find the meeting very supportive. There will also
usually be some translators present.
If you would like the solicitors to discuss a specific topic or
issue that you are facing, you can also email our
beforehand
More on the meetings on the
Asylum
Support Project page.
PARTNERSHIP MEETINGS
Third Saturday of each month. £10 for non-members (couples or individuals)
Next meetings 1.00pm - Saturdays October 18th.,
November 15th. Address
The meetings start with a talk by two solicitors, then general questions
within the meeting. Afterwards you can have an informal one to one
discussion with one of the solicitors, but you may have to be patient -
those who arrive at the meeting first will also be first on the solicitors
list. To give everyone a chance, individual sessions are for maximum 10 mins.
If Civil Partnership is your main concern, please read
and digest our Civil Partnership Guide beforehand. All the information we have on CP is posted there.
Those who attend the partnership meetings will understand that,
with the continually increasing costs associated with
asylum seekers support work,
which is now our primary focus, we cannot afford to run these
meetings at a loss. The solicitors (who normally charge £200 or more
per hour) donate their Saturday afternoons once a month. You
can play your part in the vital work of the project (and come to as
many partnership meetings as you need) by joining as a
member or
friend of the group (min £20). There will be a per-meeting
charge of £10 for non-members (couples or individuals) to help
cover, at least, our overheads.

This service is operated by volunteers using remote
diversion. We are aware of and are working hard to resolve some recent
problems of reliability. Messages left by callers to the solicitors helpline
will be dealt with, as far as possible, in the subsequent 2 working days.
If you do not require legal advice, you may receive your answers by posting
your question on our Forum.
WEBSITE - FORUM - EMAIL
With the arrival of Civil Partnership
legislation, there is a solution to most partnership immigration
questions contained within this website. Our
volunteers, however, frequently find themselves giving information which is already available
on line. With the moving of our focus towards asylum, it is
increasingly important that our limited resources are properly targeted.
With a little extra time and patience, you are likely to find what you
need here.
If you have exhausted the resources of the website and the many
related links, but still appear to have an unanswered question - visit our
very active Forum.
Volunteers, solicitors and others with personal experience of the UK
immigration process visit the Forum regularly. It is a valuable
resource which also has a powerful search facility.
You may, however, have a partnership question which you are unable or
unwilling to share on the Forum. In such a case, please
