ASYLUM SUPPORT MEETINGS
2010 - Thu 1st July, Tue 3rd Aug, Thu 2nd Sept, Tue
5th Oct, Thu 4th Nov, Tue 7th Dec.
Transport update
The Asylum Seekers Support Meetings are held monthly. The
meetings can be a vital first point of contact for those who have not yet
made an asylum application and who have a real fear of persecution if they
return home.
Note please: These meetings are for those who have claimed
asylum or are thinking about claiming asylum. Anyone else who
would like to attend should
contact the office beforehand.
Our asylum support team will be
available from 5.30 pm on meeting days, for informal discussion of
your immediate needs and/or how the meeting can be of most use to you. If
you need a referral to a specialist legal aid solicitor, your details will
be taken at this time.
These preliminary chats will help us to optimise the
structure of the main meeting to suit as many people as possible. PLEASE
arrive early to allow plenty of time to assess whether you will benefit from
a one to one talk with a solicitor at the end of the meeting. Due to
time pressures, the number of individual solicitor sessions will be limited.
The main meeting will run from 6.30 to 8.30 pm
The meeting will usually start with a talk given by two
solicitors and a barrister, followed by general questions after which there
will be an informal group discussion. One to one meetings with a
solicitor may be possible after this if time allows. Whilst there are likely
to be aspects of your own situation which you may not want to talk about in
the open meeting, sharing your story will be appreciated by and valuable to
others and you will find the meeting very supportive. There will also
usually be some translators present.
If you would like the solicitors to discuss a specific topic or
issue that you are facing, you can also contact the
office
beforehand

Asylum
Support Project page.

2010 - 17th July, 21st August, 18th
September

Transport update
The meetings start with a talk by two solicitors, then general questions
within the meeting. Afterwards you can have an informal one to one
discussion with one of the solicitors, but you may have to be patient -
those who arrive at the meeting first will also be first on the solicitors
list. To give everyone a chance, individual sessions are for maximum 10 mins.
If Civil Partnership is your main concern, please read
and digest our Civil Partnership Guide beforehand. All the information we have on CP is posted there.
Those who attend the partnership meetings will understand that,
with the continually increasing costs associated with
asylum seekers support work,
which is now our primary focus, we cannot afford to run these
meetings at a loss. The solicitors (who normally charge £200 or more
per hour) donate their Saturday afternoons once a month. You
can play your part in the vital work of the project (and come to as
many partnership meetings as you need) by joining as a
member or
friend of the group (min £20). There will be a per-meeting
charge of £10 for non-members (couples or individuals) to help
cover, at least, our overheads.

USING THE
WEBSITE and FORUM
With the arrival of Civil Partnership
legislation, there is a solution to most partnership immigration
questions contained within this website. Our
volunteers, however, frequently find themselves giving information which is already available
on line. With the moving of our focus towards asylum, it is
increasingly important that our limited resources are properly targeted.
With a little extra time and patience, you are likely to find what you
need here.
The Partnership section of the
website has a wealth of information about immigration for unmarried
partners and civil partners. Please study this carefully
before you do anything else. If you still seem to have an
unanswered question, your next step should be to visit the
Forum.
The Forum has a
very effective search facility and there is a high likelihood that
your question will have previously been raised by someone else. Many
people think that their situation is unique, but find in the Forum
that very similar scenarios have been covered before. If a
search does not provide the information you need, please post your
question and our experienced volunteers will respond in
staightforward cases. Questions requiring specialist legal
input will be referred to a rota of expert solicitors who will
respond as and when needed.
If you have a partnership question which you are unable or
unwilling to share on the Forum, please
